The Scan Anxiety Guide
Scan anxiety

It has a name, and it is not a personal failing.

If you have been through cancer treatment, your body has lived through things it did not choose. That memory stays.

Scan anxiety, sometimes called scanxiety, is the heightened fear, physical tension and emotional distress that arrives before, during and after imaging. Racing heart. Shallow breathing. Broken sleep. Thoughts that will not settle.

Research shows it affects a significant number of survivors and that it does not simply resolve with time. It is a recognised response to a high-stakes experience.

The hard part is that it often shows up in the body before the mind registers it. Which is why what helps is not a trick that makes it disappear. It is knowing what to do before, during and after.

What is inside the guide

Four short sections. Practical, specific, and written to be read the week of an appointment.

01

Before the scan

How to prepare your nervous system rather than just your calendar, including a breathing pattern you can use in the waiting room.

02

During the scan

Grounding phrases, what to say to the technologist, and how to give your body something steady to hold onto.

03

After the scan

The part nobody prepares you for. What helps in the days of waiting, and the signals worth paying attention to.

04

Underneath it

Why this was never really about the scan, and how steady support between them changes what each one costs you.

Hi, I’m Shannon

My own journey has been one of resilience, healing, and transformation. After breast cancer treatment, I experienced the deep loss of identity, strength, and confidence that many women know all too well.

My path has been anything but linear. From serving as a firefighter and EMT, to international work, to rebuilding after illness. Each experience added to a growing toolbox of resilience, strength, and compassion that now guides the way I coach.

I know what it is like to feel lost after a health crisis, and I also know the joy of finding your way back. This guide is part of that, gathered in one place so you do not have to work it out alone.
